BIRTH PANGS - extended review of ORIGINS. How the Nine Months Before Birth Shape the Rest of Our Lives. by Anne Murphy Paul.

The psychodynamic edge is not: that "...we do not put fetal life so readily behind us". It is: that fetal life is never put behind us, because without it the pronouns "we" and "us" would communicate no inner bond. NYTimes Week. Picture of punched-out, red-eyed, swollen head of an infant, over the caption "The Secret Sponsors"- "A political ad with a wisecracking baby. A quest for the financing source (..of the baby-mutilating politics of rebirth). A trip down the rabbit hole." The content here is that billionaire back-door politicians are steaking the election and killing the baby. This analysis is further elaborted by Frank Rich labelling Deleware Tea Bag Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell a GOP "useful idiot" (Lenin's tag for naive supporters of communist ideology as ideal).

"A friend in the U.S. military sent me an e-mail last week with a quote from the historian Lewis Mumford’s book, “The Condition of Man,” about the development of civilization. Mumford was describing Rome’s decline: “Everyone aimed at security: no one accepted responsibility. What was plainly lacking, long before the barbarian invasions had done their work, long before economic dislocations became serious, was an inner go. Rome’s life was now an imitation of life: a mere holding on. Security was the watchword — as if life knew any other stability than through constant change, or any form of security except through a constant willingness to take risks.

"It was one of those history passages that echo so loudly in the present that it sends a shiver down my spine — way, way too close for comfort.
