THE GRAMMAR OF CONSCIOUS(NESS)

-Another correction of metaphysical misuse of grammar
(The argument: verb-noun shift permissible for 'conscious'; not 'aware. Their grammatical similarity is metaphysically misleading)

-> THE FRENCH EXISTENTIALIST JOHN PAUL SARTRE philosophically distorted the grammar of consciousness by equating it* with "intentionality", or "consciousness of".
This move* (in TokenSpace) brings consciousness (Cs.) into grammatical symmetry with "awareness", which is widely taken in philosophy as the nominal psychological primitive for analyzing experience. It is the primitive notion, for instance, in the theory of appearance. "It appeared (to me) that p", where p is a primary experience-reporting proposition, is standardly taken as synonymous with "(I was) aware that p (but perhaps ~p)". On this assumption, "awareness of" and "consciousness of" become grammatically identical in respect of (being) intentional. The preposition "of" imports an objective content, a value of 'f(x)' in the simplest case of p, e.g., "(there was) a blue spot on the wall". And since the word "awareness" is intuitively categorized as a noun-derivative from the actual self-reference situation, which has variable objects (according to S* token type), dependent as designatum on abstracting the active element of 'intending' from lowest-level (descriptive) communication, it suggests itself that the word "consciousness" is similarly a 'reification'.

Sartre and other existentialists thought they were doing a good thing, with this metaphysical twist of grammar, restoring a crucial category of experience uncontaminated by subjective metaphysical dross. Admittedly, it does bring together, without confusing, the two neuro-psychic levels of arousal corresponding to dreams (S*1) and perception (S*3). This is the metaphysical ground of consciousness as basis of both -- and of S*2; but one advantage of using the psychosemiotic hierarchy as metaphysical background is freedom to omit, and insert, Cs. categories where needed. But the transition from verb to noun is not so easily dismissed when "aware of" is carefully overlaid with "conscious (of)". I parenthesize "of" to mark the hesitation in identifying them. The language for propositional content, variable p, srikes one as an addition; there seems to be something "consciousness" stands for, as a self-referred continuity common to all content, before addingany "of?". Something like John Locke's tabula rosa. "It*" for "itself*"; also: Aristotle's Theos -- Thought thinking Thought. It is verified, now, that the neuro-psychic apparatus does, in fact, connect impressions inscribed on its function as a fetus, with later experience through Amygdalan memory loops, when aroused. Symbols invoking archetypes of the collective unconscious arouse them. That is the functional material basis of what, long after conception, becomes clear and distinct propositional awareness. This memory-center works silently "on the token side" during the process of communicating, supplying the pattern, or template completing itself 'underneath' textualized consciousness. <= This requires hippocampal memory to complete normal sign-use situations.

Thus, as the metaphysical ground of continuity in experience, under signs used by individuals in groups, consciousness holds its own as a primitive nominal designator. In itself, it is non-intentional; therefore 'returns to itself' in Text-Token "Doubles", marking "Squares" (1-49+1= 50).

NEW STARTING POINT IN ANALYSIS OF COMMUNICATION:

CONSCIOUSNESS IS NON-INTENTIONAL (better: PRE-INTENTIONAL)

Thus: a person may not be present to their apparently directed content, taken from the textual side, but, in the act of speaking, be acting out agendas linked on the token side through the Unconscious (early Freud, Jung) with trauma. Archetypal feeling-tones frame perception of objects. Tokens of Archetypes thread historical Group-fantasy. (See Lloyd deMause "The Emotional Life of Nations*"; it* is a repetition of the emotional life of human fetuses in the womb, sustained by people acting from the delegate position of consciousness as a "We".)

Understanding this about ourselves as agents (S*4 - subject to moral law applicable to 3-dimensional space, with consciousness as the communication 'constant'. By this mapping it can also be taken as the hypothetical correlate of the effective differential neuro-psychic (material) energy discharge accounting for it, and its content, as particular events. This is the "empirical consciousnes", it could be said. In sign-use, it is the site of the token (hence the designation "TokenSpace" for the relations of actual S* to each other). Thinking-consciousness follows textual connections through causes to get to reality. But the cortical brain processes which supply texts for tokens by this route are underlaid, sometimes undercut and reversed, by Unconscious constraints on the tokens (repression, compression-with-distortion, displacement, substitutions -- all the ways the psyche has of disguizing the 'dream thought', deciphered by Freud; but not limited to these)
