Cursing tokens used to castigate others often have psychosexual roots: "prick", "cunt", "pussy", "asshole", "piece of shit", "fucker", etc., picked up during pre-pubertal development and weilded later, as vicious perjoratives, to demonstrate mastery of verbal recollection of the early feeling, given the acquired hormonal cathectic/ discharge to the fantasy. "That's how you make me feel, and here's the way I deal with that. yrghs yrggh yrghgh."
Leaving aside the M-F curse abomination, "Fucking asshole", the meme, is particularly interesting in this respect. As a verb, it brings the Oedipal fantasy to lips, tongue mouth-movement, acted out later in later genital sexuality, sustained as preferred mode by male homosexuals. I never thought of it both ways until now. Use of the terms was acquired separately, as I remember, with no more connection than a normal teenage boy, I guess, going through "I'd love to cut Coach Kelly's wife's grass yuk yuk" lifestage. The little construct gained by conjoining them was mostly an in-deepest-reserve grinner, hardly to be taken 'literally' (whatever that means) that "God damn Son-of-a-Bitch," or other street talk, mostly avoided to be sure. But in this case, the double verb-noun overlay -- "fucking assholes": what we do; "fucking assholes" what homosexuals could be called for what they do, but that would "go too far", given its ultra-pejorative cut-off, so is blocked from collective consciousness by "reaction formation" mechanism ("No! No! WE LOVE 'EM!"), re-inforced in MSM public discourse by Political Correctness. But thar she stands: the ultimate deep-throat/livegoat/verb-noun grammatical loop from the past into the present, through the unconscious, by "gay marriage." Used with each other, in all likelihood, as a near term with various nuances, it is a mark of repression to disconnect "Gay marriage" from "fucking assholes". I therefore claim my right under free speech to use the meme publically, if pressed to affirm "gay marriage". It will be a spontaneous hoot, a laugh-gimmick, a yuk at their expense elicited by the double meaning. It is only a curse if so taken by those over whom words for sexual acts are still over-cathected. That is the flipside of PC.
Along another line through the Unconscious as metaphysical container of tokenspace, lies the Greek "phil (-ic)" vs "phob (-ic)" contrast, as attractive-repellant, love-hate psychic opposites. As in "homo-" ("homophilia", "homophobia"), and "Judaeo-" ("Judaeophilia", "Judaeophobia" - 'anti-Semidtism' ). "Phobias", as irrational fears or compulsions (fering 'if nots') was one of the first instinctual quirks Freud analyzed. Broadly reconstructed for present purposes, one neuro-psychic path of cathectis has been blocked, so that instead of proceding to its wish-satisfying instinctual terminous, an intercepting punishment-route substitutes a "hardness of rejection" content. (I became phobic about touching certain objects, tastes, the way things felt in the mouth.) An intermediate stage is 'resistances' aroused by associated ideas, places, etc., and 'fixations' (Jung: 'perseverations' - inability to 'let go' of an idea or behavior).
Real phobias, converting old libido into hated revulsion, into involuntary muscle-spasms (striking out, etc.), are chronic, long-term conditions. You don't "just get over it" any more than dreading haircuts.
Now, I don't have homophobia, in that sense, at all. Not at all. But I have instinctual sympatico with those who are -- cellular resonance, as it were. It is the insistence on "homophilia", over-determined love-of-love insouciated 24/7 days on end into collective consciousness by PC MSM, that 'poisons the blood of communication' and compells instinctual Resistances. It demands virtual wedding, linguistically, to virtual wedding, sexually. That is the double "I Do/I Don't" token elicited by "marriage", reversed from "union of opposites" to "same sex." We may or may not love them, but we don't have to redefined what we are to show acceptance. The fact that that is demanded is an insult. The fact that it has been yielded to is a psychic calamity.

The connective "->" is used here to link tokens of signs actually used (and/or directly applicable to those used) in daily news cycle communication* by the main stream media (spcf. It can be read "implies*" (or, reversed, "<-", "is implied by*") the connected sign uses, according to rules tacit in the communication process itself; especially including unconscious group-fantasies and delegate-positions from which these are acted out. David Sirota's tirelessly documented thesis in Back To Our Future is that "the 1980's remains central to our society, our politics, our everything" (p. 217). With the sub-thesis that "the 80'sTM " themselves were predicated on Back to the 50's as future, as in Reagan's unabashed nostaglia and Marty MacFly's character. The post-'08 Obama years have replayed, and are continuing to replay the '80s, which, in turn, replayed the 50's. Narratively by-passing the Hippie 60'*s Vietnam war protest era entirely, while at the same time amplifying the downside as condemnable, anti-patriotic background that prevented U.S. from winning. The way Sirota weaves this meta-tale of two replay tales is psychohistorically epiphanous, its broad outlines (except for unacceptable analysis of 'racism' at the end) indisputable, confirmed in the experience of those who lived through those years and these, to the extent they were connected by the collective cudlture. It is with gratitude for these steping stones that I am moved to 'take it up another level from the other side', tracing a meta-physical story from his meta-narrative. '88, token of year and collective-individual sign-use (S*iv,v), can be taken as pivot of conscious-to-unconscious deviation from America's Idea. Since 8 is the number of the letter H, 88 is HH to this pre-conscious memory connection, used in neo-Nazi circles as code for Heil Hitler! That illustrates how one unconscious connection leads to ("=>") another. It also shows how snakebrain poison can enter psychosemiotic processing through codes. The year '88 occurs quite often in Sirota's account, which I take to be partly due to its unconscious attraction to the NAZION complex. Part I
-Sympathy for the bullied, pushed as an ideology (=>can lead to), Revolt (<= sympatheticatonic constriction) against Killer MommieState (=>parasympatheticatonic over-extension of secular state nurturing function).
"Jocks", "Good Father's sons", and (paradoxically) the abused, will inwardly bristle at external constraint regarding voluntary other-behavior as infringement of free male perogative.
Bullying arouses reflexive repugnance in those of balanced sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous system pulsation, merely by processing. The key word here is "balanced". Sustained/chronic sympathetic constraint of orgasmic pulsation-function creates the constricted, herky-jerky, spactic motility discharges of Reichean biopathy. This is unbalanced functioning, placing the ogranism under a psychic "load" in its processing of energies.
Most damaging is chilling the will to voluntarily sacrifice self for others. This is partially accomplished by making rules, or laws, to require benevolence and punish non-benevolence. NOT CRAZY -- executed rational coherent complicated plan, achieving apparently pre-calculated effect.
E.g., when arrested, he had documents intended for police in a zip-lock bag in his hip pocket, in addition to other indications of long-term planning.
Actual clinical paranoia, as opposed to pop-cult pot head freakiness, or right-wing 'everything is dangerous' political mind-set, is focused, loud, and rare. (cf. "paranoid of government") (note: the DSM is group-think psychosemiotic concensus, confabulating 'syndromes' to evidence pop culture terms of personal self-reference.)
Thus, many said Loughner was "obsessed" with Giffords. Is that what it is? An 18 yr old male visits attractive, powerful poliical woman, gets dissed for asking the (highly intelligent) question "what is government, if words have no meaning?", and, perhaps peripherally, retains that as psychic rejection while going through many changes. No more "obsessed," I'd say, than a high school senior boy with the Coach's wife, or Catholic boys of that age with nuns.

A history of paranoia is, to some extent, a history of delusion. We have seen above how paranoia can be traced back to the 19th century and delusion back to the 15th century. Many histories of psychology and psychiatry examine developments in ideas as if writers were not influenced by other texts. Berrios (1991) has provided a historical and philosophical corrective to such a view by arguing that current conceptions of delusions (of which paranoia is currently seen as a sub-set within most psychiatric texts) are based on 19th century views of belief and that although Jaspers is often credited with the commencement of the 'received view' of delusions, he, in fact, borrowed terms and concepts in common use -- particularly by philosophers -- in the 19th century. Berrios (1991) suggests that the philosophical underpinnings of later psychiatric theories of delusions can be traced back to 17th century debates. For example, both Hobbes and Locke, in their different ways, propounded views that helped develop intellectualist notions of insanity whereby delusions were seen to be almost synonymous with insanity.
Berrios notes that it was only by the 1820s that delusions and hallucinations were conceptually separated. Through the 19th century a number of philosophical developments laid the foundations for current conceptions of delusions. These included the displacement of Lockean associationism by faculty psychology; the separation of knowledge and belief; views of delusions as conceptions and of hallucinations as disturbances in perceptual processes; a concentration on the form rather than the content of individual symptoms (which Berrios, 1988, terms the 'anatomo-clinical' model of disease); the viewing of delusions as 'morbid beliefs'; and the growth of theories of personality. However, Berrios' agenda is to argue that since current conceptions of delusions are based on 19th century views of belief, newer ideas about beliefs should be used to re-conceptualize delusional phenomena:
Such conceptual bases include an obsolete theory of language, the epistomology of introspection sponsored by classical psychology, and views of intentionality that did not allow for the existence of 'empty' speech acts. Progress has since been made in all three areas, but little effort has been made to update the conceptual structure of delusion: indeed, it may well be the case that such updating could precipitate its disintegration.
Berrios (1991, pp.6-7)
Berrios argues that delusions are not really beliefs anyway and are, instead, 'empty speech acts that disguise themselves as beliefs' (1991, p.8) since they do not fulfill certain abstract criteria for belief. It is possible to challenge such a view since such criteria do not take account of discourse analytic work suggesting that essentialist notions of 'attitudes' and 'beliefs' are problematic (Harper, 1992). However despite the existence of a presentist agenda Berrios's paper is interesting in making links between psychiatric and philosophical theories. Moreover, he makes a number of interesting points about the linguistic differences between psychiatric terms hiding conceptual differences (eg the English delusion referred to a solely intellectual condition whereas the French délire involved emotional and volitional elements as well).
Both Berrios (1991) and Walker (1991) view Jaspers as the main historical figure behind current conceptions of delusions. Lewis (1970) does not address any of his paper to developments in the history of delusion although it is clearly a related phenomena that would have influenced how paranoia was viewed. Moreover, it is noteworthy that some historians, like Walker (1991), argue that although current texts cite Jaspers as the main proponent of the view that it is the form (eg bizarreness, conviction and falsity) of the delusion which is important rather than its content (eg persecutory themes), he actually suggested it was instead the relationship between the origins of the delusion and the person's personality which was important. This suggests that the citing of Jaspers in support of the view that delusional form is central is another example of the use of history as a warrant to give current conceptions of delusions authority and legitimacy.
1.5.2 The nosological context of paranoia
A history of paranoia is also a history of nosology, or classification. Lewis discusses the variations in the use and definition of paranoia as if it were an isolated problem. However, the difficulties with diagnosis and classification are general and have a long history. Moreover, psychiatric classification is not an unproblematic scientific endeavour. Commentators like Widiger & Trull (1991) and Robins & Helzer (1986) note how diagnostic classifications serve a number of (often opposing) purposes and that they reflect a consensual, rather than a straightforwardly empirical, view of diagnosis. Indeed, within the APA, committee decisions are sometimes voted on (American Psychiatric Association, 1987, p.xx). In 1973 the APA Board of Trustees voted to remove homosexuality per se from the DSM although a related category was retained (Wilson, 1993). Moreover, there is evidence both of exceptionally stringent acceptance criteria for some new diagnoses and of establishment duplicity (Caplan, 1991). Wilson (1993) has provided a useful history of the DSM-III, placing it in its professional, political, social and intellectual context.

Berrios (1991) has provided a historical and philosophical corrective to such a view by arguing that current conceptions of delusions (of which paranoia is currently seen as a sub-set within most psychiatric texts) are based on 19th century views of belief and that although Jaspers is often credited with the commencement of the 'received view' of delusions, he, in fact, borrowed terms and concepts in common use -- particularly by philosophers -- in the 19th century. Berrios (1991) suggests that the philosophical underpinnings of later psychiatric theories of delusions can be traced back to 17th century debates. For example, both Hobbes and Locke, in their different ways, propounded views that helped develop intellectualist notions of insanity whereby delusions were seen to be almost synonymous with insanity.
Berrios notes that it was only by the 1820s that delusions and hallucinations were conceptually separated. Through the 19th century a number of philosophical developments laid the foundations for current conceptions of delusions. These included the displacement of Lockean associationism by faculty psychology; the separation of knowledge and belief; views of delusions as conceptions and of hallucinations as disturbances in perceptual processes; a concentration on the form rather than the content of individual symptoms (which Berrios, 1988, terms the 'anatomo-clinical' model of disease); the viewing of delusions as 'morbid beliefs'; and the growth of theories of personality. However, Berrios' agenda is to argue that since current conceptions of delusions are based on 19th century views of belief, newer ideas about beliefs should be used to re-conceptualize delusional phenomena:
Such conceptual bases include an obsolete theory of language, the epistomology of introspection sponsored by classical psychology, and views of intentionality that did not allow for the existence of 'empty' speech acts. Progress has since been made in all three areas, but little effort has been made to update the conceptual structure of delusion: indeed, it may well be the case that such updating could precipitate its disintegration.

Berrios argues that delusions are not really beliefs anyway and are, instead, 'empty speech acts that disguise themselves as beliefs' (1991, p.8) since they do not fulfill certain abstract criteria for belief. It is possible to challenge such a view since such criteria do not take account of discourse analytic work suggesting that essentialist notions of 'attitudes' and 'beliefs' are problematic (Harper, 1992). However despite the existence of a presentist agenda Berrios's paper is interesting in making links between psychiatric and philosophical theories. Moreover, he makes a number of interesting points about the linguistic differences between psychiatric terms hiding conceptual differences (eg the English delusion referred to a solely intellectual condition whereas the French délire involved emotional and volitional elements as well).
Both Berrios (1991) and Walker (1991) view Jaspers as the main historical figure behind current conceptions of delusions. Lewis (1970) does not address any of his paper to developments in the history of delusion although it is clearly a related phenomena that would have influenced how paranoia was viewed. Moreover, it is noteworthy that some historians, like Walker (1991), argue that although current texts cite Jaspers as the main proponent of the view that it is the form (eg bizarreness, conviction and falsity) of the delusion which is important rather than its content (eg persecutory themes), he actually suggested it was instead the relationship between the origins of the delusion and the person's personality which was important. This suggests that the citing of Jaspers in support of the view that delusional form is central is another example of the use of history as a warrant to give current conceptions of delusions authority and legitimacy.
1.5.2 The nosological context of paranoia
A history of paranoia is also a history of nosology, or classification. Lewis discusses the variations in the use and definition of paranoia as if it were an isolated problem. However, the difficulties with diagnosis and classification are general and have a long history. Moreover, psychiatric classification is not an unproblematic scientific endeavour. Commentators like Widiger & Trull (1991) and Robins & Helzer (1986) note how diagnostic classifications serve a number of (often opposing) purposes and that they reflect a consensual, rather than a straightforwardly empirical, view of diagnosis. Indeed, within the APA, committee decisions are sometimes voted on (American Psychiatric Association, 1987, p.xx). In 1973 the APA Board of Trustees voted to remove homosexuality per se from the DSM although a related category was retained (Wilson, 1993). Moreover, there is evidence both of exceptionally stringent acceptance criteria for some new diagnoses and of establishment duplicity (Caplan, 1991). Wilson (1993) has provided a useful history of the DSM-III, placing it in its professional, political, social and intellectual context.

John Paul II Beatification Set for May 1 as Vatican Confirms Miracle
The late Pope John Paul II, whose death in April 2005 prompted a global outpouring of grief and demands that he be made a saint on the spot -- "Santo Subito!" as mourners cried -- will move a step closer to canonization when he is beatified on May 1, the Vatican announced Friday.
As expected, Pope Benedict XVI affirmed the judgment of Vatican medical experts and theologians that a French nun's neurological disorder had been miraculously cured after she prayed to the memory of John Paul in June 2005.
ODDLY COOINCIDENT: Ronald Reagan was on the same news pages, with son Ron confirming that he was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease from 1984 on. If John Paul II, linked closely to Reagan in world affairs, especially through Wm. Casey, is canonized, he becomes officially recognized as an ascended heavenly supplicant , whose ways on earth cannot thenceforth be challenged in the Catholic Church. Similarly, challenge to anything Reaganesque, after he survived the political bullet as has now penetrated Giffords' brain, could only be perceived as sacrilege. Thus, JPII's certified power to cure a French nun's neurological disorder, who had prayed that he entreat The Creator on her behalf, would retroactively restore (the illusion of) Reagan's health and vigor during the later Iran-Contra hearings. If all goes as planned -- and these most-most- highly ritualized group processes unfold according to their own narative thread, whatever else is happening -- the beginning and end of March, 2011, will be book-ended by JPII's Blessedness - infusing - Ronald Wilson Reagan revival: who took the bullet for us all; and Gabriella Giffords', who has done the same.
