We are being misled by all the hyperbole about Iran. Despite all its bluster about Israel, Iran does not have a history of being militarily aggressive. The last time it attacked another country was in 1856, when it briefly occupied part of Afghanistan. But since the end of World War I, our country has militarily intervened 77 times in foreign countries, resulting directly or indirectly in the death of more than 6 million people.

We are an empire with more than 700 military installations in 130 countries. Iran has none. The U.S. has 10,000 nuclear warheads, half of them deployed throughout the world. Iran has none. We have violated the nuclear non-proliferation treaty for 40 years. Iran has kept its word. We are currently at war with two countries we invaded, Iraq and Afghanistan, and are killing people with drones in Pakistan and Yemen. Iran has no troops outside its borders and has violated no country's airspace.

We are continually warned by Congress and the Obama administration that Iran poses a threat to our security because it may soon be able to make a nuclear weapon. Big deal. We have nuclear-armed naval vessels in the Persian Gulf patrolling their shore. Israel has 200 within easy firing range. Who are we to deny Iran possession of what they are being threatened with?

Israel and the U.S. have never attacked a country that had nuclear weapons. Might not Iran think having a few would serve as a deterrent against two countries with such aggressive records? For what other reason could Iran want them? Certainly not to launch a suicidal first strike.

How would you feel about the U.S. and Israel if you were an Iranian? In 1981, Israel bombed a nuclear reactor in Iraq, a clear violation of international law. Now it is threatening to do the same thing to your country. The U.S. instigated three United Nations economic sanctions against your country and is militarily threatening to "keep all its options open." Your country has rich oil reserves like Iraq - and look what happened to it. If Americans fear Iran, a weak nation unable to reach them with nuclear or conventional weapons, think how Iranians must fear America.

It is standard operating procedure for governments to demonize countries they are getting ready to attack. The public has to be brainwashed for it to accept clear violations of international law. Pundits argue back and forth whether or not the U.S. or Israel will make good on veiled threats to attack Iran. They argue the pros and cons but never discuss the illegality of violating the sovereignty of a nation state or the immorality of killing masses of innocent people. Americans should not succumb to this propaganda and remain silent.

Could that have not been deliberate? Well, the effort to identify "America" with "Israel", which DOES threaten to ATTACK IRAN, is the aim of the pro-Israeli lobby, as insults to America by the Zionist entity are dismissed as "family feud" by Joe Lieberman. As if "we" included THEM by blood ties, so insulting "us" is OK. To the contrary, I am highly critical of the "entangling alliance" we have with Israel and am appalled at the their intransigence despite the aid we provide. However, just as the religious right have all but destroyed conversations on fiscal conservatism in this country, so have obsessive jew-haters like yourself tainted legitimate criticism of our relationship with Israel.

As for Iran, while I share some of the authors sentiments about US foreign policy, I have no illusions about what a nuclear armed military theocracy means for stability in the Middle East and indeed the world.
