-From a Psychosemiotic Perspective
An objective group-psychological event of massive dimensions* has occurred.
*This is metaphysically measured by the flow-through of a certain energy process by three-brained (human) beings as they communicate. Psychosemiotics is the general theory of the constituent relations of signs used in communication to the conscious/unconscious psychodynamic matrix they emerge from and express. Elaborated formally elsewhere, psychosemiotics is used here applied to actual, real-time discourse, to supply a causal account of this historical narrative, 11.4.2008. As if The Conversation, as some British philosophers speak of it, extended throughout Cosmic TokenSpace by means of this energy, linking All and Everything,

Before beginning, it may be related that my own flow of process has been the upper Brain 1 (B) - mythic, leading back to Egyptian Horus Eye; and Brain 1 (A) - Cosmic intellectual, leading to the metaphysical energies. These were linked after watching a video inside the Great Pyramid.
Flip Flopped 4 in the BEN-BEN
Carved on the wall of the highest ^ point inside the Great Pyramid, above the Queens Chamber, under the mountainous roof, is a "4" figure, up-side down, turned-over. No doubt belonging to an entirely independent historical strain of script, the mental habit of mixing and matching S* tokens brought a shock of recognition to the Old Brain, arousing Amygdalan memory, of higher cognitive Late Brain function with numbers. Thus spanning vast expanses of time and space, as if two sides of the most, most ancient metaphysical Token were re-conjoined in/through one's mental processes in the instant. (The earliest tokens, by some accounts, were two ends of a broken stick, one retained by each of the two persons bound by the contract its unity represented.) As if an Omnipresent 'something' in intelligent communication was restored. Imaginary spinning the two sides of 4 loop conjoins two sides of the mind linking space and time by brain functions.

As we ordinarily speak about ourselves, use of the three common terms on the left correlates, by data of self observation localized in objective processes, with those on the right-hand side, with the meaning of "Brain" explained further below.

The three brain center loci of human be-ing is the fundamental linkage of processes requisite to sign use in conversation. It is the metaphysical reference point of all analyzed discourse posited here.

The term "brain" can also be used as an anatomically organized organ, as the head brain illustrates, functioning in its own way to control a region of content under sign-use. In this generic use, the spine can be taken as the Brain of the torso, processing the quantum of psychogenic neural expenditure energizing the torso to move, attack in self-defense, copulate, work. Further -- and this may seem the most tenuous step, but it gains credence with consideration -- the function of regions of arousal of breast and abdomen (solar plexus; gut), organized through the limbic system, interactive with the head and spine brain at the amygdala, is hypothesized as a separate-unto-itself completing totality in the flow of process, to account for an entire third of the content of communicated consciousness.
The distribution of One into Three through the meaning of the term "brain" reconstructs an objective ground of the otherwise only personified unity of the Christian Trinity. For Brain 1 there is God the Father, Thought thinking thought. For Brain 2, God the Son, bridegroom of the Soul. For Brain 3, the Holy Spirit, held aloft as in John 3.14. Right wing politics predicates on collective construct identities to define a base of reference to which a standing three-term agenda appeals: pro-war, anti-tax, anti-abortion (pro-God, -gun optional. These terms never get discussed, themselves. They are processed by a separate brain* center, independently of conscious thought and more or less unconnected to each other. Compromises and composites, such as "Joe the Plumber", become subjects of sentences all those who participate in political discourse can bandy about, swapping stories, exchanging insights, checking alignments, etc.. There doesn't even have to BE a plumber named Joe. These "fourths" (S*-constructs) perform the function of distributing the content relating to the standing three-term agenda over the shared space of communication (TokenSpace) as a common content.
Functionally, predication on these meta- terms, synthesizing the three standing sub-bases (war, money, abortion), supplies material to be disposed of by the conscious, thinking 'mind' from another, autonomous brain* center.

Citizens of states so colored on TV news network pollster's maps, reiterated in their prattle, are thus manipulated to think of themselves as Red or Blue, although this system of reference and grammar is strictly a construct of
the process of communication, a historical accrual that lies outside the scope of legislation under the U.S. constitution, but must be challenged .
The November election, following this heavily layered mythical rebirth symbolism, will Square the Palin illegitimacy (brain 3) under the unconscious idea that one half of the American political map will be colored her 6th child; all who vote will move over to accept them as national family.
And this is the substitution trick played by the snake brain on the head, to get past the soul without changing. For its lower part, righteous love of sex for pure pleasure, contests for oxygens bound in the higher blood by righteous love of the sacred. Brother-Sister copulation is, after all, incest.

Thee psychodynamics of this template are remarkable not just for their ancient origin for their depth. These two perceived mutual transgressors, by abortionists and gays, belong to the two common areas of trauma shared to some extent by all humans - birth and sexualisety. The two issues arises from the way the brain's gears work in handling trauma. The Red and Blue Eye of Horus system has brought these two strata of damage in the developmental trajectory into a conscious/unconscious flip-flop processes as required to complete the agenda of group reproduction (Horus). Every rational person understands the logical law of non-contradiction. (The same proposition cannot be both true and false; in symbols, the conjunction "p. ~p" is necessarily false.) This has been accepted since Descartes (circa 1640) as certain, indubitable, known lclearly and distinctly through the meanings of the terms used.
Much less readily perceived, however, are actual violations. And the conjunction of propositions asserted alongside others that are, or imply, their own falsehood can occur in many ways. People contradict themselves in many ways.
It can happen in the most succinct way imaginable, right underneath our very noses, when the texts of signs used in communication reverse what the displayed tokens indicate. Tokens are fungible bearers of textual meanings, as synonymous words can be interchanged for the same idea. For example, when "freedom" is
uttered approbatively in contexts that legitimize servitude, its meaning* reverses what its utterance would indicate. This most succinct, vicious and toxic form of self-contradiction has not heretofore been logically analyzed. It is the ultimate, degenerate case of twistedness in sign-use, rounding out Jonathan Schell's vivid overview of lying and deception by McCain/Palin jackboots.

Nor did he account for how such a condition came about, to my recollection. What us seen now in S* predicating everywhere on the negation of their own tokens can be an intermediate stage. This leaves matters up to Obama. He must be elected to prevent birth of the HORUS monster. But then, recalled --unless he will purge government of reverse predication.

The Three Brain Theory of Sign Use
THE THREE BRAIN THEORY OF SIGN-USE
1. Socrates

2. Direct self observation gives the standard philosophical divison: Processes of thought using signs (cognition); processes of feeling (connation); processes of bodily movement (motility). (Mind, soul and body)
3. The three term series of cumulative word order -- movement, expression, speech -- can be used, together with though/observation experiment, to demonstrate the three brain function.

The Logic of DOUBLE TALK
With Reversals
It is possible to define types of a general category of speech known colloquially as "double talk". The following are remarks on the logical structure and relations of some of these types.
Types: informal
-saying one thing, intending another
-talking the talk, not walking the walk
-hypocrisy: condemning another for what is the accuser is guilty.
-'talking with forked tongue'
- 'talking out of both sides of his mouth'
Formal - word repetition, with grammar

Examples: McCain visuals (tokens) -- how he looks; (stubby arms, broken, baggy, pathetic, over his head

-The brain assimilates the double-impulse it gets from what it cognizes (perceives) as the same thing, and supplies language that predicates on "McCain" as a union-of opposites. However, it*, the sign-use, can be 'flipped over' on one side or another, depending on whether the visuals or the audials are processed through consciousness. This corresponds roughly to the whether hippocampal or amygdalan memory determines the content of consciousness under McCain*. Something (close to 'free will' with 'interest').
One determining factor is a judgemental predicate, e.g., "Mc
Cain is a good guy". This goes with "war hero", and the opposites are further disambiguated along the lines of what fits the affirmation.
The further predicates applied to McCain will align with what "feels right", and the facts about the man 'cherry picked' to align with the feeling.
Thus, it is essential to disambiguate the visuals as "war hero", as "worthy suffering sacrifice", vrs broken, weak, old, nasty nerd; these, then, "square' with "McCain is a good guy". Together with the slogan "For Republicans, its character that counts", this puts him out there as the "values candidate" and cooks the leftist liberal multicult's goose.
With Reversals
It is possible to define types of a general category of speech known colloquially as "double talk". The following are remarks on the logical structure and relations of some of these types.
Types: informal
-saying one thing, intending another
-talking the talk, not walking the walk
-hypocrisy: condemning another for what is the accuser is guilty.
-'talking with forked tongue'
- 'talking out of both sides of his mouth'
Formal - word repetition, with grammar

-The brain assimilates the double-impulse it gets from what it cognizes (perceives) as the same thing, and supplies language that predicates on "McCain" as a union-of opposites. Thus, in sentences, "McCain*" stands for one "thing", a subject of reference, value of the variable '..x...' in ',,,fx...'.
However, it*, the sign-use, can be 'flipped over' on one side or another, depending on whether the visuals or the audials are processed through consciousness. This corresponds roughly to the whether hippocampal or amygdalan memory determines the content of consciousness under McCain*. Something (close to 'free will' with 'interest').
One determining factor is a judgemental predicate, e.g., "Mc
Cain is a good guy". This goes with "war hero", and the opposites are further disambiguated along the lines of what fits the affirmation.
The further predicates applied to McCain will align with what "feels right", and the facts about the man 'cherry picked' to align with the feeling.
Thus, it is essential to disambiguate the visuals as "war hero", as "worthy suffering sacrifice", vrs broken, weak, old, nasty nerd; these, then, "square' with "McCain is a good guy". Together with the slogan "For Republicans, its character that counts", this puts him out there as the "values candidate" and cooks the leftist liberal multicult's goose.

Positionality
THE CONTRADICTORIAN POSITION
(Q. Could One Person be Right in thinking everyone else was wrong? How?)
I. The subject. What this is about.
Colloquialisms in English for psychosemiotic processes others are assumed to share include these:
'official story', 'what every body believes', 'accepted opinion', 'prevailing point of view'
These terms descriptive of a type of content communicated in the media of mass communication, and personal conversation. In objective terms, they indicate a common flow of brain 1 process under sign use. ("Ask anyone: they will all tell you the same thing in so many words.") Such phrases are used ubiquitously to categorize linguistic 'fronts', 'lines' or 'positions' aligned with other sign-uses, e.g.:
"of 911", "We are the good guys", "Iraq had WMD",
"its fucked up"
That to which such extended phrases as "The official story of 911" apply, are present and known to consciousness through the sense of 'audience': that space imagined to be full of people in a dark 'theatrical' womb-surround-- siblings in the first row, listening to one warble, twang, bellow into microphones or otherwise act out ('show off'). Audience* is Quadrant III (NE corner) of the Cartesian Scintellizer*. On it, I -> III -> II -> IV bow-tie line, swooping lower-left (I), up, over (II) and out (IV) lower-right, traces: I - processing in the anatomical apparatus; II. Consciousness under Sign Use; III. Audience; IV. Historical Output; completion (what the moving finger wrote). On this schema, The sense of Audience includes all that a consciously speaking person assumes about the actual containers of their planetary body, from birth to death, womb to cosmos. That would be the totality addressed As a totality. This is how the CS* Squares consciousness.
II. Consciousness
Consciousness is used here as the term for the awareness that accompanies those manifestation of the planetary body which constitute its content.
1. Content of consciousness under sign-use is taken as worked up by processes of the anatomical preparation to the degree of articulate self-awareness that any two, or indefinite number of other, people will share identical content under identical sign-use as shown by identical associations and applications.
In addition to its signature S*, a content of consciousness includes, as components: A. (a) Quality-complex; and B. (an) Intensity (dynamic, force factor). In abbreviated terms:

(Communication with "Aliens" is a fantasy construct, and was once recognized as such. Then came X-files.). The position and situation of the planetary body as object common to the person's subjective and the Audience's external awareness, is one determinant if S*, defining their positionality in space. However, there is another, inner Positionality of consciousness, determined by the 'lines' and 'positions' they align with in communication. Older heads are given credit for being able to 'hold the line' on a certain topic or issue, against challengers, and having individual 'positions on issues". If these are self-consistent and Square, they are said to have become wise.

4. Contradictorian Positionality: new here
When majoritarian opinion is rejected because it predicates on internal text x (negated) token self-refuting constructs for primitive sign uses, it requires confronting and rejecting in formal terms as an impossible completing totality.
. Ex.: praising democracy as a good thing because it brings more peaceful, stable nations, while creating conditions that undermine its possibility. This must be confronted as wrong in its own terms; not just opposed, but opposed through what it proposes. What they do is not just non-democratic, but anti-democratic.
A contradictorian position is required to confront such self-contradictions deliberately squared as truth. Confronting doctors who have spread diseases which they sell medicine to treat, is one paradigm twist. Listening them defend the right to do that, or predicating on it as OK, challenges defense by the contradictorian position.

Ilocutionary force is the effect that the fact-stating content of a communication has on Brain 1 consciousness. The "informational" or textual function of the signs used in it.
The magnitude of its effect depends on the congruence of the relevance of the information with the motive/agendae defining the situation. Analogy, more or less strict, is the loom on which the mental tapestry is woven. Strict analogy is one-one correspondence of two things x and y when:.
Definition: "x is strictly analogous to y" = ((x,y)(P)( Px <=> Py)),
where P is a property (point-set, S*-category, etc.) specified independently of x and y.
Theory of individual objects
The individuals in the universe are objects referred to by ultimate names. Ultimate names are 'rigid designators'. Rigid designators are substitution instances of x,y for all P in the field of application of a.

B. DECONSTRUCTING GENESIS
Perlocutionary force is the emotive/motivational effect of brains2/3 on consciousness. It is linked to what can be pictured. It is content of the 5 senses qua phenomenal (S*), re-presented to consciousness in the upper triad through the token: illustration, narrative, mythopoesis, metaphor, cartoon, sight gag, etc. (Cf. G. Gurjieff: the 5 objective characteristics)

II. Three Brain Analysis
Brain 2 and brain compete for textual consciousness as soul vrs. instinct.
The fundamental inner moral act is the orientation of consciousness toward the results of the flow of process through brain 2 or brain 1. There is an inner stop-valve, or choice-switch, for opening one or the other, and both at the same time with brain 1 in states of action from totality. When the switch opens the valve to brain 2, consciousness processes what is called "soul" in objective psychosemiotics. Opening the valve to brain 3 brings, most relevantly in the normal flow of life, the sexual impulses, and, with them, the various mechanisms (automatic behavioral manifestations) the neuro-psychic trajectory has deposited to deal with the energy. "Soul" is not intrinsically opposed to "Sex", though the brain 3 function is stilled in church and school by making the children sit down and shut up. This allows brain 2 content to take the lead in forming the cognitive memory functions (hippocampal memory). These carry little insistence without desire to learn and know, which is the brain 1/2 confluence defining the "as above" for the brain 1/3 confluence "so below".
The Upper Triad of Sign-uses, theological, philosophical, existential (S*7-6-5) require participation of the soul brain in order to achieve conscious personal results. It is the soul brain that differentiates the "I" of S*5 through the "Theos-" of S*7", by way of the "Logos" of S*6. Socrates defined philosophy as "tendance of the soul". "God", in psychosemiotic terms, is the token of the completing totality given under sign use (S*). (The S*^ of the Universe, or Universe*^.)
As as sign-use, God* has a Dark Side. That is because the totality of the three brain experience of an individual includes (as has only recently been realized by the intellectual world) the fetal origins all share in the womb. This is a source of 'innate', but not identical (a distinction not available to Descartes), formed content of brain 3. The Placental Container of the original conscious formation flooding back through a "we" group-fantasy of siblings in a single Mother's Womb Surround: Phantom Nurturer ("from whom all blessings flow" -- the Logos-ecstatic side of God*) v. Poisonous Sea Monster. The Dark side of God* as a sign opens the gate to the Reptile Brain, though is not identical with it, and it is a calumny against religion to assumes its influence derives only from opposing the lower flow of process. (fearing punishment for 'listening to the voice of satan' saying "sex is wrong, but that's OK."). With the inner separation between the work of the two brains fixed in consciousness, soul and sexuality do not necessarily compete as controlling functions. Jung notes, as an aside, that one thing that drove primitive people to uncontrollable mass violence was being subject to "loss of soul". Interpreted here, that would be loss of the active psychosemiotic force of their God*.

It is unique to this system of psychosemiotic that tokens occurring in the present are the manifestation of it as a particular (and particularizing) energy. The Present* squares itself in meaningful pronounciation (an instance of S*^). This is given a name in the Gurdjieff system I am adapting: Omnipresent Okidanokh. It is the Second Grade energy proceeding from His Endlessness on the Most Holy Sun Absolute, blending active, passive and neutralizing forces according to the sacred law Triamizikamno, penetrating the totality of the universe simultaneously. The anti-NAFTA and anti-war contingents share a potential affinity that would emerge in a politics of (roughly) beating the swords into plowshares. The Clinton -Lieberman line on the cube splits up the constituencies, blocking the democratic current.

He was in prison during the riotous '67-'73 Vietnam war years. She was a Goldwater Republican at the outset and did not protest the war. That meant a lot. "If you simply change about three words you change the whole report," Gingrich said, adding that the report seems to have been "deliberately written to maximize the pain to the Bush administration." It was written by three former State Department officials who were "deeply opposed to what President Bush is doing," he said, and who wrote the report "to maximize confusion."
Gingrich characterized the NIE as "very misleading, very destructive and very unfortunate… almost a bureaucratic coup d'etat."

"What is the status of morality?"
This was a poll question at the Phora. I used the occassion to work through a psychosemiotic approach.

I can't answer this poll question with categorical perspecuity without clarifying its language.
Straightening this out needs doing in order to prevent circular definitions, contradictions, and generally non-progressive intellectual metapolitical maundering (I've been doing politics in my mind a lot recently). A COMPLETE (OR COMPLETING) SYSTEMATIC, CONSISTENT THEORY OF SIGN-USE (psychosemiotics) resolving all such questions in a single ideal language of communication at one stroke, by laying down its rules for designation and grammar -- is the only way I work in addressing questions of general philosophy anymore. It includes anything anybody ever thought or said in their locutions, but formally reconstructed to avoid said failings.
One might ask the "status" (with options) of:

Then obviously, I should say, the status of morality is not a Quantitative property, or moral disagreements could be settled by measuring. In this sense it is "non-cognitive"; but so is predicating quality of a material object (it is as false that the sky is blue as it is that lying is wrong, if you take that line). The difference is that qualitative distinctions applied to objects have a causal basis in sense perception, wheras moral distinctions do not; or, again, they could be settled by empirical investigation. Moore's Naturalistic fallacy refuted this forever, if Hume hadn't already.
As to the metaphysical status of the subjective factor expressed by moral distinctions, it is the fourth (4th) of the seven (7) layers (strata, text levels) of conscious experience, sandwiched between (5th: "I") and
(3rd: "embodied"), schematically signified by
"I DO (x)" (-- "THEE WED" completed for reproduction). Its existence, with this status, serves two general functions in relating the person to reality: 1. to connect him/her to the three dimensional world of space and time structuring sense experience in which the planetary body interacts with others; 2. to prove the existence of God
(by understanding that the categorical imperative, demanding respect for action conformable with rationality as such, proceeds from the realm of things in themselves, the noumenal v. phenomenal. (Kant)
I'm not much on moralism as a point of view, though. Taoists have little use for it. "There is no such thing as right or wrong; there's only ying and yang."

The 8th IS
The 8th Is
And the God Who Doesn't Exist (fetishized non-Being)
Logicians have been saying "existence isn't a predicate" since Kant pointed out that the difference between there being real vrs. only imaginary 30 talers in my pocket isn't marked by the real one having a property the other lacked -- tacitly attributing a non-existent-but-real status to the non-existent. The philosopher Alexis Meinong actually recognized the existence of self-contradictory things, such as the round square, which could not possibly be real. This drove a wedge between use of "existence" and "reality". The modern logical insight that the grammatical sign used to conjoin words and phrases into determinate true or false sentences, "is" in English, expresses a function (operation, ) proper to discourse, and presupposing it, not objects*, is a fundamental clarification of thinking about existence, or reality, in systematic, coherent terms. The distinction between formal and informal modes of speech (the above is informal), between object language and metalanguage (as in Carnap's LSL), as well as that between unreconstructed vs (theoretically) reconstructed discourse (in explicit true or false statements) is based on this clarification, and must be assumed as background of any metaphysics pretending to be rigorous as well as systematic.
If one turns from "existence" as clarified by the Existential quantifier "There is an x such that..." of symbolic logic, to the little grammatical particle "is" from which it is derived by analysis of function, at least six other uses are found: the is's of
assertion
identity
predication
class membership
class inclusion
present tense
If "existence" -- informal use -- is counted as seventh in this list, as the cognitive gravity center around which the others cluster, the question arises, could there not be an 8th? Wouldn't there have to be? -- in a sense including logical but also (a) non-logical (compulsive) necessity?
The informal use, as in "unicorns do not exist" already posits an eighth through its own negation. "To be is to be the opposite of what it is not to be". In strictly logical terms, this ought to be no more than a confused idea. What it is to be, be-ing, or Being, is a reification of the completed relation of referent and object in a name. What is named, or referred to by a definite description (Russell), is what exists. Any "8th" (for the seven +1 -- shifting token types for numbers) can only be the reality of whatever Being or Existence stand out from, as named. The 8th is thus the predicate of non-Being through its name.
Is God real
It is this sense that merges in informal metaphysical discourse, I suggest, with the use of "real", contrasted with "unreal.". Logical texts, to my knowledge, never point out that "existence is not a predicate", as insight into the logical structure of discourse, does not imply that "reality" is not a predicate, leaving the question of the relation of reconstructed to unreconstructed metaphysical thinking hanging in the air. Even the hallowed assertion "God exists", widely taken as formulating the difference between two distinct species of human being, "theist" and "atheist", according to whether they do, or don't "believe in God", as they say ... even this most simple and fundamental assertion whose content would have been supposed determined as true or false, if rigor meant anything, has never been definitively assigned definite metaphysical status. This is due to a compound confusion, in that "God exists" if "God" is a name, logically speaking; but "God is a name" is not given except through use of the word "God", with intent to refer. Thus whoever uses it globally, for the totality completing itself in their experience, can affirm they "know" God exists, because they use the word with intent to refer -- which is actually all they are
"knowing", at all, as demonstrated by the grounds for the claim.
A.J. Ayer's Language Truth and Logic already demonstrated the non-illocutionary force of "God exists". "God" is not used as either name or descriptive expression from which verifiable true or false propositions follow. The fact that the logical positivists never received a response on this point broke the back of religion within the limit of pure reason. The compulsion -- not cognition -- generating God use by God users -- continued with assertions of "His" existence undeterred. The dichotomizing of human psychology on the basis of it was retained intact. In the face of the split between reason and practice in sign-use. the notion took hold that there was an extra-logical domain of knowledge, achievable through freedom by affirming the Unreal as Real: the "God" that doesn't exist as an object in the world is nevertheless made Real by affirmation of His Name in Faith. This was the main idea of the neo-liberal theologians who paralleled logical empiricist philosophy through and after mid-20th century. "The God that exists is the God that appears after God disappears in the agony of doubt," Paul Tillich wrote in The Courage to Be. "God is dead", claimed T.J. Altizer. I always took it to mean "linguistically dysfunctional"; that the term "God", as a token, no longer communicated, but stood in the way of communicating, what it once did. Theologians of this sort kept the token going by holding a mirror to empirical scientific reality and saying: the Not This that is real.
Meanwhile, the existential tradition in Europe from Kierkegaard to Nietzsche to Sartre and Heideggar vied with Biblicalists Karl Barth, Emile Brunner; Rudolf Bultmann's de-mythologizing program; Ernst Cassirer's work on Symbolic Forms in natural languages; religious historian Mircea Eliade's Myth of Eternal Return; paralleled from l900 by the ever widening influence of psychodynamic depth psychology, merging the physiology of sexual arousal, motivation, ritual and symbol, religious ideas and the matrix of individual-group relations, leading from family to politics. These are only some of the many profound new perspectives twentieth century unfolded to put the spotlight on what religion is all about. Bridging the language of organized religion and psychoanalysis, to go with the great novelists Mann and Hess, were Rudolf Otto's Idea of the Holy, landmark echo of the Magisterium of old; and William James' Varieties of Religious Experience. James make the further bald face suggestion, in his classical "Will To Believe", that "belief in God" was a matter of wishing, rather than thinking, the world was a certain way. The kind of thing reserved for the Right to Believe to vouch for, when reason and all else fails.
The Reality Function
If the particle "is" is understood as having a function, not as standing for anything ('exstence'), should "reality", as in "is real" also be properly understood through its function?
Here is where Sigmund Freud and the theory of repression come in. "Reality" IS, indeed, a "predicate", in the sense of what it's use says about the user. It is a kind of welcome to the world. There is not just use of the word according to certain rules, however; there is also, in addition, the inner attitude of 'something to confront', or contend with. An acceptance -- minimal cathexis of its representation with libido -- of it as subject for further opposites. Or rejection: denial, refusal to recognize, turning away from, suppressing the name.... This psychological rejection of something's 'reality' is noisily chattered by use of such phrases as "that's unreal". In Occidental religious traditions, no limit is placed on the possible fulfillment of pleasures on earth below, or on the experience of blissful joys of heaven beyond, so long as soul, heart and mind remain true. Many traditions there are, all claiming to fulfill the human potential. Occidental religions, unfolding larger ego potential, generate more ego-conflicts with recalcitrant reality.
Such a psychosemiotic move, quite acceptable to ordinary English grammar, amounts to a "token tautology", a use of signs in which a text verifies itself on its own token . "Word" is a word.
Yet if a subtle linguistic shift is allowed from the informal "non-existent", to the psychological "unreal", the question of what is going on, in the sense of what is communicated by, advancing "the reality/unreality of God" is not just afirmation or rejection of "being", but rejection, in principle, of a systematic judge of the experienced totality of conscious being
And the God Who Doesn't Exist (fetishized non-Being)
Logicians have been saying "existence isn't a predicate" since Kant pointed out that the difference between there being real vrs. only imaginary 30 talers in my pocket isn't marked by the real one having a property the other lacked -- tacitly attributing a non-existent-but-real status to the non-existent. The philosopher Alexis Meinong actually recognized the existence of self-contradictory things, such as the round square, which could not possibly be real. This drove a wedge between use of "existence" and "reality". The modern logical insight that the grammatical sign used to conjoin words and phrases into determinate true or false sentences, "is" in English, expresses a function (operation, ) proper to discourse, and presupposing it, not objects*, is a fundamental clarification of thinking about existence, or reality, in systematic, coherent terms. The distinction between formal and informal modes of speech (the above is informal), between object language and metalanguage (as in Carnap's LSL), as well as that between unreconstructed vs (theoretically) reconstructed discourse (in explicit true or false statements) is based on this clarification, and must be assumed as background of any metaphysics pretending to be rigorous as well as systematic.
If one turns from "existence" as clarified by the Existential quantifier "There is an x such that..." of symbolic logic, to the little grammatical particle "is" from which it is derived by analysis of function, at least six other uses are found: the is's of
assertion
identity
predication
class membership
class inclusion
present tense
If "existence" -- informal use -- is counted as seventh in this list, as the cognitive gravity center around which the others cluster, the question arises, could there not be an 8th? Wouldn't there have to be? -- in a sense including logical but also (a) non-logical (compulsive) necessity?
The informal use, as in "unicorns do not exist" already posits an eighth through its own negation. "To be is to be the opposite of what it is not to be". In strictly logical terms, this ought to be no more than a confused idea. What it is to be, be-ing, or Being, is a reification of the completed relation of referent and object in a name. What is named, or referred to by a definite description (Russell), is what exists. Any "8th" (for the seven +1 -- shifting token types for numbers) can only be the reality of whatever Being or Existence stand out from, as named. The 8th is thus the predicate of non-Being through its name.
Is God real
It is this sense that merges in informal metaphysical discourse, I suggest, with the use of "real", contrasted with "unreal.". Logical texts, to my knowledge, never point out that "existence is not a predicate", as insight into the logical structure of discourse, does not imply that "reality" is not a predicate, leaving the question of the relation of reconstructed to unreconstructed metaphysical thinking hanging in the air. Even the hallowed assertion "God exists", widely taken as formulating the difference between two distinct species of human being, "theist" and "atheist", according to whether they do, or don't "believe in God", as they say ... even this most simple and fundamental assertion whose content would have been supposed determined as true or false, if rigor meant anything, has never been definitively assigned definite metaphysical status. This is due to a compound confusion, in that "God exists" if "God" is a name, logically speaking; but "God is a name" is not given except through use of the word "God", with intent to refer. Thus whoever uses it globally, for the totality completing itself in their experience, can affirm they "know" God exists, because they use the word with intent to refer -- which is actually all they are
"knowing", at all, as demonstrated by the grounds for the claim.
A.J. Ayer's Language Truth and Logic already demonstrated the non-illocutionary force of "God exists". "God" is not used as either name or descriptive expression from which verifiable true or false propositions follow. The fact that the logical positivists never received a response on this point broke the back of religion within the limit of pure reason. The compulsion -- not cognition -- generating God use by God users -- continued with assertions of "His" existence undeterred. The dichotomizing of human psychology on the basis of it was retained intact. In the face of the split between reason and practice in sign-use. the notion took hold that there was an extra-logical domain of knowledge, achievable through freedom by affirming the Unreal as Real: the "God" that doesn't exist as an object in the world is nevertheless made Real by affirmation of His Name in Faith. This was the main idea of the neo-liberal theologians who paralleled logical empiricist philosophy through and after mid-20th century. "The God that exists is the God that appears after God disappears in the agony of doubt," Paul Tillich wrote in The Courage to Be. "God is dead", claimed T.J. Altizer. I always took it to mean "linguistically dysfunctional"; that the term "God", as a token, no longer communicated, but stood in the way of communicating, what it once did. Theologians of this sort kept the token going by holding a mirror to empirical scientific reality and saying: the Not This that is real.
Meanwhile, the existential tradition in Europe from Kierkegaard to Nietzsche to Sartre and Heideggar vied with Biblicalists Karl Barth, Emile Brunner; Rudolf Bultmann's de-mythologizing program; Ernst Cassirer's work on Symbolic Forms in natural languages; religious historian Mircea Eliade's Myth of Eternal Return; paralleled from l900 by the ever widening influence of psychodynamic depth psychology, merging the physiology of sexual arousal, motivation, ritual and symbol, religious ideas and the matrix of individual-group relations, leading from family to politics. These are only some of the many profound new perspectives twentieth century unfolded to put the spotlight on what religion is all about. Bridging the language of organized religion and psychoanalysis, to go with the great novelists Mann and Hess, were Rudolf Otto's Idea of the Holy, landmark echo of the Magisterium of old; and William James' Varieties of Religious Experience. James make the further bald face suggestion, in his classical "Will To Believe", that "belief in God" was a matter of wishing, rather than thinking, the world was a certain way. The kind of thing reserved for the Right to Believe to vouch for, when reason and all else fails.
The Reality Function
