(*Spirit: the German “Geist” was used for both, in early Guttenberg Bible translations, and can be translated into English either way. But with obviously very different textual implications; ‘ghosts’ haunt houses, whereas ‘spirits’ can be sold in bottles or delivered from Zeus’s brow by Athena’s nous, etc.. Also appearing at the time was influx of remarkable men teaching and manifesting particular psychic powers …. spread of teachings from East of the Caucasus …. Tibetan brotherhoods; theosophy ….

Empirical, scientific studies of this widely disseminated notion of a special kind of psychic energy were those who explored depth psychology:

1. Sigmund Freud, who metaphysically grounded on the hypothesis of sex-organ/hormone arousal, gave it the name “libido”, and included it under the general psychological heading of “instinct theory”. Arousal toward a sexual opposite is called “object cathexis”; “cathexis” is defined as neurological discharge: ‘emptying’ the impulse differential of one cell’s energy into another via connections.

“7 Days in June” was Maureen Dowd’s 6.23 column, bylined “The general may be a Jedi, but he’s a maladroit Jedi” and containing these remarkable thoughts: “Gen. Stanley McChrystal (sic she misspells his name consistently throughout, confirming the ‘christ’ association on the token side) and his hard-bitten, smart-aleck aides nuked the president, vice president and other top advisers as wimps, losers and clowns in a Rolling Stone profile meant to polish the general’s image.”… “So the commander in chief can be bad-mouthed as weak by the military but then he can’t punish the military because that would make him weak? It’s the same sort of pass-the-Advil vicious circle reasoning the military always uses. …McChrystal (sic) publically pressured Obama to do the surge, warning that without it, Afghanistan would be “Chaos-istan.” But the president did do the surge and Afghanistan is Chaos-istan.” This is Maureen whinning. She doesn’t know what she’s saying; none of it adds up to anything other than “He’s not MY kind of guy!”, which I guess she is paid to show forth.
